Jeon Jungkook was a master of perfect structures.

He stood at the floor-to-ceiling window of his penthouse, sixty stories above a Seoul that looked like a motherboard of flickering lights. His reflection in the glass was sharp—a tailored black suit, a jawline like whetted stone, and eyes that had forgotten how to look at anything with warmth.

He held a silver lighter in his hand. Flick. Snap. Flick. Snap.

The flame danced in the reflection of his dark pupils. To anyone else, it was just fire. To him, it was a reminder.

" Five years " he whispered, the sound barely a ripple in the cold air of the room.

Five years since the smell of smoke and the sound of a closing door had become his only companions. Five years since Ember had turned his name into a curse. He had spent every day of those years stacking bricks of steel and ice around his heart, building a life so high and so cold that no one could ever reach him again.

He had built a masterpiece of isolation. He had built a sanctuary of shadows.

But tonight, a single file sat on his mahogany desk. A name was printed at the top in mocking, elegant letters: LEE EMBER.

The lighter snapped shut, plunging the room into darkness.

Jungkook didn't need the light to know what was coming. He could already feel the temperature in the room rising. The architecture of his life was magnificent, yes. It was strong. It was expensive.

But as he stared out at the city, he realized he hadn't built this empire to move on. He had built it to be the grandest cage in the world. And now that the bird was coming home, he wasn't going to let her fly.

"Welcome back to the ruins, Ember," he breathed against the glass. "I've been keeping the ashes warm for you."
